On my way out of the office, I was waiting for the elevator and this song came up randomly on my iPod, and for some reason, I just got really really angry at it. No lie. I have no idea why it elicited such a visceral reaction from me, but I’m just going to assume it was all part of “this day”.

In less random, or maybe equally random, news, I’ve added this bottom toolbar, I know I know, from StreamPad for Tumblr (via Mark Lisanti) that streams every song I’ve ever uploaded and really showcases the terrible terrible taste in music I have. It’s kind of handy, if you happen to be a populist who likes rap music like I do.

For one reason or another, I haven’t gotten a long, uninterupted, decent night’s sleep for the last few days— no matter what time I go to bed I keep waking up at 7:30 at the latest, and there’s no real reason for that to be the case.

It’s not even 9am yet, and I can already feel that delirium, the kind where your thoughts only make it 75% of the way, and everything you say sounds really terse and wraught with bitchassness, also, I’m subsequently just sleepy too. Not helping is the fact that I seem to be hungry, no one’s winning here (I can’t believe you’re still reading me complain)— maybe I’ll get a croissant on my way to work.

So, yeah, if we typically dialog and interact, IRL or otherwise, sorry. Just be forewarned and please be patient as my head might be even slower than it normally is.

Furthermore, isn’t this all so annoying*? When you just know that you’re kind of tired now, but you’re going to be really exhausted later on?

*Also annoying? This whole post that’s just me whining at a pretty considerable length about the pretty trivial fact that I haven’t been able to sleep that well/long

I imagine this is a good muxtape to listen to as background music if you’re trying to get a lot of stuff done. At least that’s my plan for today.

It kind of reminds me of those oldies mix cassette tapes that they used to sell at gas stations that my family would always, for some reason, buy on long car rides. The other things that we would get at gas stations on trips like that would make me really happy were: a 32 oz Gatorade (orange, citrus cooler, or, later on, starfruit), Combos (any flavor really), and orange Tic-Tacs.

Flight of the Conchords - ‘Leggy Blonde’

The Flight of the Conchords CD has been floating around our apartment for awhile, and I didn’t think to listen to it until this morning when, for some reason, Amir and I started talking about the show.

Anywho, ‘Leggy Blonde’ is one of my favorites, the other being ‘Sello Tape (the Tape of Love)’ which is unfortunately not included on the soundtrack but still an awesome awesome song.

The link above is a really vivid and honest account by Roger Ehrenberg as to why his startup Monitor110 failed. Ehrenberg goes on in great detail how his internet company went from: great idea, to front page of the FT, to then lots of infighting over not-data based opinions resulting in an eventual failure of the company/product.

There’s a lot of general business principles and ideals that seem like they could be learned from this ‘hindsight is 20:20’ story. It’s also a really interesting read if you’re curious about the way small businesses operate; it also goes to show that capable people + a good idea isn’t always enough to carry a brand new company to success, there’s always a decent amount of luck involved.

So I was on the Julia Allison team’s website Nonsociety, and the only real question I had was how this website plans to make money. Granted, it looks like there’s not too much spend on their part involved— Tumblr hosts the actual blogs, Vimeo serves the videos, aside from someone programming and cutting these videos, that seems like it’s the only real serious cost, but I’m still not sure what the planned channel for revenue is.

The other thing I figured was that the existing website was kind of a placeholder, something they had to rush out to match the timing of the Wired cover, which was leaked a couple of weeks early(? Right? I feel like I read somewhere that that’s what happened?), so that might explain why none of the ‘The View’ type videos exist yet, and I guess if the quality’s good you could do a titlecard/pre-/post-roll type thing on that, but right now it doesn’t look like there’s any other real revenue stream, unless they’re really doing the TV show about the site, in which case I guess that counts, but not really in a “we’re making money on the internet kind of way”.

If anyone has any insight*, email me or something, because I can’t figure out if the whole thing is really smart (no real start-up costs) or really shortsighted (no way to make money).

*Especially on the traffic, I’m assuming it’s at like 20k a day (JA’s gets 10-12k, the other two get 3-5k each? Plus a decent amount going through their dashboards and not hitting the site), with probably a serious spike when the Wired issue hits newsstands.

This song, using that term loosely, is all kinds of awful, but conceptually it’s pretty great. Sampling Coldplay’s ‘Viva la Vida’ Swizz Beatz yells (a lot) about trying to make a lot of money, or as he puts it, “that Oprah”.

While I will attempt to not compare him to Nicholson or “The Batman” joker, I just dont know if Ledger has that crazy and creepy side needed to play the joker. I will admit that I havnt seen too many of his movies, but the ones I have seen him in he doesnt play a creepy crazy guy completly off his rocker.

Ledger is wrong for this. He’s always seemed to be a very two-dimensional actor, not at all convincing, and here we have him trying to handle a character as deranged and maniacal as the Joker.

Horrible news. I don’t want Ledger as the Joker. He’s just so wrong. He doesn’t even have the look and his acting is mediocre, especially when he tries to act like Val Kilmer.
