A few weeks ago Frank Bruni made a list of his favorite neighborhood restaurants, in response Aziz also made his own list, after I saw both I thought, “Oh, nice, I agree with most of that.” The part that I didn’t agree with was the fact that they both had The Little Owl on their respective lists, a restaurant that I had only been to in the past by making morning reservations a few weeks in advance, the kind of thing that isn’t exactly what I think of when thinking casual and neighborhoody.

That being said, tonight I went with a friend at around 7:30, put our names down, walked around the west village for a quick second, and we were sitting at a two-top by 8pm. I’m sure luck had a lot to do with it, but I guess I was wrong in being overly-daunted about getting seats there.

So if you’re looking for a bite in the west village, hop on over The Little Owl for a great meal, also, make sure you get the grilled duck appetizer (over a bed of arugula with balsamic, truffles, almonds, and parmesan) because it’s really really great.

My own neighborhood casual restaurant list would probably look something like this:

Schiller’s
Minca
Prune
Cafe Habana
Flea Market
Momofuku Noodle Bar
Il Bagatto
Grand Sichuan
Lure
Yama (downtown)
26 Seats
The Little Owl
